Virgo had a daughter, Persephone, who was promised against her will to Hades, God of the Underworld. Refusing to descend from Mount Olympus, home to the Gods, Zeus resulted to trickery to get Persephone to her betrothed. Whilst walking in the forest, she sees a beautiful flower, bends down to pick it and Hades surges up from the depths and confines her in the Underworld. Virgo is greatly displeased and casts a terrible drought upon the Earth. Zeus relents and convinces Virgo to agree to keeping her daughter by her side for only 3 months of the year, the rest of the year she must stay with Hades. Thus our winters are barren and cold, reflecting the sufferance of the beautiful daughter of Virgo in the Underworld. A sad tale indeed!
